Inside El Pitallito in Washington Heights

Our Story · Nuestra Historia

Bringing Mexico to Washington Heights

El Pitallito is a family-run kitchen serving real, handmade Mexican food on Broadway — the recipes, the flavors, and the warmth of home.

We opened El Pitallito in 2024with one goal: to cook the Mexican food we grew up on, the way it's meant to be made. No shortcuts, no frozen anything — just slow-braised birria, hand-pressed tortillas, and salsas made fresh every day.

In a neighborhood as full of life as Washington Heights, we wanted a place that felt like a kitchen back home — generous plates, familiar flavors, and a welcome for everyone who walks in.

Our Roots

Our recipes come straight from family — dishes passed down through generations and cooked with the same care today. Birria, mole poblano, chilaquiles, tamales: the staples of a real Mexican table, made by hand the way our family always has.

Made by Hand, Every Day

We press tortillas fresh, braise our birria low and slow, and simmer consomé until it's rich and deep. It takes longer — and that's the point. Real food, real flavor, no compromise.

Mexican Culture in NYC

Food is how we share where we come from. Every plate we serve is a piece of Mexican culture brought to Upper Manhattan — for our neighbors, for families far from home, and for anyone curious enough to pull up a chair. That's what El Pitallito is really about: a taste of Mexico, made with pride, right here in the Heights.

“It feels like having a Mexican neighbor that cooks for you.”
